Enjoy the shortest day of the year with a meditative hike. We will take a short, silent walk on the accessible trail along the Upper Highland Lake and enjoy the sunset together in peaceful quiet. Depending on the group, we may extend the hike a bit longer. Be sure to bring flashlights, as we will be walking at dusk!
There is parking for about 60 cars immediately to the left after the parking/ranger booth. Since it is the off-season, there is no fee for parking. We will leave from the parking lot here and walk up to the accessible beach, along a paved path to the accessible trail (0.15 miles). The trail winds through the woods and ends at a road (0.4 miles). From there, we will turn left on the road and almost immediately there is a boat launch that we can stand on and watch the sunset over the lake. For those who are feeling up to it, we can walk a bit further down the road (0.25 miles) to a beach that will have a better sunset view. The beach is sandy and would not be suitable for a wheelchair. It is an easy, flat hike, and the total mileage out and back is 1.6 miles for the longer hike or 1.1 miles for the shorter one.
People need to be sure to bring appropriate clothing (warm, non-cotton layers), a flashlight or a headlamp, and water.
