This spring and summer, join Hilltown Land Trust staff and community members as we explore some newly released works as well as some old favorites in a casual, welcoming reading group. We will meet from 6:00-8:00 pm via Zoom on the final Thursday of each month during April through July. The selected books each address topics close to HLT’s core mission, and represent a range of genres including non-fiction nature writing, Indigenous history, and environmental justice. We are looking forward to discussions both entertaining and educational, and hope you’ll be able to join us! For more information, please contact barry@hilltownlandtrust.org

Week Two: The Common Pot, by Lisa Brooks
Join us on May 27th as we discuss Lisa Brooks’s (Amherst College, Our Beloved Kin) history of Native writing and geographies of the Northeast following colonization. The recipient of acclaim on its release, Brooks’ work has since become a fixture of Native Studies courses. We look forward to an exciting discussion that helps us rethink the western Massachusetts’ landscapes we love.
“Having had their writings published for centuries, New England’s Native Americans have bucked a dark stereotype, which predicates indigenous authenticity on illiteracy. Lisa Brooks bravely demonstrates that Native New England’s literary heritage actually represents Good Medicine (in the most traditional Indian sense of the word). Taput ni / Thank You Lisa Brooks for showing the next generation of Native American writers that their path is true.”—Melissa Tantaquidgeon Zobel, Mohegan Medicine Woman and Tribal Historian
“A powerful and compelling statement about early Native American writing that will leave a lasting impression.”—Early American Review
