Spend the Saturday before Earth Day amongst the stunning scenery of the Waterfall Trail in Cummington at our trail workday! The half-mile-long trail runs through a sugarbush, along wetland forest to the east and a beautiful ledge to the west and culminates with the awe-inspiring terraced waterfall of Porter Brook. Work is needed along the whole length of the trail. Activities will range from breaking down and moving fallen trees and limbs with the use of loppers and handsaws to re-blazing the trail with paint. The trail is relatively flat, wide, and even. All experience levels are welcome! Work gloves and tools will be provided, but if you have your own, feel free to bring them along.
Along with HLT staff, the workday will be led by Pepper/Sarah Fournier-Scanlon who lives on and cares for the conserved land. Pepper is a farmer and taps the maple trees on the property to create organic maple products for Two Mamas Farm.
Trail work may include, but will not be limited to, using pickaxes, saws, shovels, loppers, rakes, and painting blazes! While this will be a physically demanding day overall, there will be trail work at varying levels of intensity. All levels of experience are welcome. Feel free to come for as much or as little of the day as you’d like!
Accessibility
Some of the work will be on off-trail, rugged terrain as we create a new path through the forest. There will be less physically demanding work, like painting new blazes on gentler sections of the trail and lopping off low hanging branches. However, all volunteers should expect at least some moderate to rugged terrain as a part of the day. The farthest point reached will be 1 mile from the parking lot.
- Bathroom: At the farm a couple hundred feet down the road from the trailhead. There is a composting toilet in the barn up a grassy slope and ramp, and a full bathroom in the farmhouse on the first floor up four uneven stone steps.
- Distance Traveled: Work will stretch along a half-mile long trail.
- Fragrances: To be respectful of those with allergies and environmental sensitivities, please refrain from wearing strong fragrances.
- Parking: Unmarked parking spots in a compacted dirt parking lot at the trailhead.
- Public transportation: Public transit is not available to the Waterfall Trail. Contact us if you are interested in coordinating a carpool.
- Seating: No seating will be provided; please feel free to bring your own folding chair if you’d prefer.
- Surfaces: Compacted dirt parking lot, leaf-covered woods trail, potential for mud.
We’re happy to discuss your access needs for this event! For questions and accommodation requests, please reach out to mariel@hilltownlandtrust.org or call (413) 628-4485 ext. 4.
