This is event is the first in our three-part Winter Woodland & Wildlife Series this winter.
Licensed forester and 7th-generation oxen logger Tom Jenkins will speak about sustainable forestry and demonstrate low-impact logging with his oxen team. Participants will hear why this style of logging is more environmentally friendly and economical for small timber harvests, as well as see how the logging team works together to move large logs. The workshop will include a discussion around a campfire of sustainable forest management plans and tips for choosing a forester and logger.
The demonstration will take place on a property in the process of being protected by Hilltown Land Trust, and will include a short history of the land, its forest management and future silvicultural plans, and the effort to protect the 400 acre parcel. Participants should expect to be outside for the duration of the talk—so dress warmly!—and be walking through the woods in variable snow conditions. Participants are encouraged to come with questions about forestry and draft animal logging.
$10 members of Hilltown Land Trust or The Trustees; $15 non-members; free for children under 13.
