Are you interested in birdwatching but maybe feel a little intimidated by how much there is to learn? Or perhaps you have started identifying birds in your backyard, but are interested in learning more in the field? Join Hilltown Land Trust on a beginners bird walk with Lee Halasz. Lee will take the group on a guided walk on conserved land in Cummington and give an introduction to the wondrous world of our avian friends. The property includes wetlands, farmlands, forest, and a gorgeous waterfall.
Lee is a native of Australia who has lived in Western Massachusetts for the past five years, and has enjoyed orienting himself in New England through our exotic (to him) ecology and local bird species. He has studied ornithology at the graduate level, has held several positions surveying birds and bird habitat, and has worked on wildlife management and endangered species issues at the state government level.
Session 1 of this program will be a visit to the same location six weeks earlier and Session 2 we will be noticing the changes in the bird populations. You are not required to attend Session 1 to participate in Session 2 or vice versa, but you are encouraged to attend both to build on what you learned.
Come dressed for being outside. Wear hiking boots with long pants and sleeves, and bring insect repellent, snacks, and plenty of water. If you have them, bring binoculars, a camera, and a field guide to birds. Please note that this location does not have bathroom facilities. This event is open to all ages.
Cost: $10 HLT members / $15 for non members
Preregistration is required for this program as space is limited. The location of the event will be given once you have registered. Email Katie at hltoutreach@thetrustees.org or call 413-628-4485, ext 4 to register.
